Scuba Diving Scare

Written by: Rebecca Wall-Clarke

In Nha Trang Vietnam my friends were getting their license but because I already had mine I waited until the final day to go on a dive with them. I was scheduled to do 2 dives in the day, but decided that for the first one I should do a refresher course because I hadn’t dived in years. Turns out diving is like riding a bike, it was easy for me to remember most of it, especially when you had the dive master there with you. I’d forgotten how AWESOME diving is…it’s the most amazing feeling ever. The instructor took us all around, there were fish, giant bright purple starfish, sea urchins that were black and spikey and seemed to glow blue from the middle. He took us to a coral that was the same type that nemo lived in and there were in fact lots of clown fish. We touched it (I’m pretty sure you aren’t supposed to touch coral but I was just following his lead!) and it did sting a little just like in the movie! He also picked up this thing that was sitting on a rock. It looked like a leafy plant in a star shape but once he picked it up, it moved and then looked more like an underwater spider!

While we were under my head had been hurting a little bit, I thought that it was just that my goggles were too tight but when I came up my nose started bleeding! The instructors weren’t too worried because apparently this is common if your sinuses are blocked which mine were because I’d forgotten that I’d had a cold. I tried to do another dive but when I was just a few meters down the pain was too much and when I came up again I was bleeding a lot. I was BUMMED that I didn’t get to do another dive but I figured it’s better to be safe than sorry!
