HomNomNom- Food in Hong Kong

Written by: Rebecca Wall-Clarke

Eating traditional breakfast food is so last month.

BBQ pork, rice, fish sauce and a friend egg are what’s happnin’ right now. At first I took the easy road and got a not so traditional English breakfast, but after that I realized eating more traditional food is way yummier and allowed me to use more sauce (I’m a sucker for condiments). This morning I ate Japanese fish curry for breakfast. I am in heaven. I can now eat  noodles for breakfast and not seem crazy! Rejoice! Although Hong Kong is more expensive than most other Asian countries, compared to Canada it’s still really cheap, especially for food. $26 I got a whole meal that I couldn’t finish and a tea. If you change currencies that means I paid less that $4 for an AWESOME meal and (ok) drink. You can get food for even cheaper if you’re down to eat street food, which I am! The only issue is that it’s hard to know what’s good. I know everyone says locals can speak english in HK but it’s not true. You kinda have to be willing to take risks and just try things, this isn’t too hard because it’s so cheap that if you hate something it probably only cost you a few dollars. A few days ago I tried a little smelly tofu, no where near as bad as it smells. I only tried a bite and would be down to try more but all I could really taste was tofu!

Another great thing about HK food is that, for the money, there is A LOT of food. Loads of opportunity for all you can eat and drink (often including beer). If you’re looking for a cheap (and clean) place to eat your heart out HK is definitely it!
