It’s been 15 days and counting since I moved to Strasbourg, France. I will be living in Strasbourg for 4 months, the longest I have ever been away from Canada, my parents, my cats, home. Although not everything has been simple (still don’t have access to my french bank account), I don’t feel overwhelmed, homesick or even particularly challenged. Culture shock seems limited to me cursing under my breath when people are 30 minutes or more late and wondering how any country functions with 2-3 hour lunch breaks. But culture shock certainly doesn’t appear to be too hard to handle. Perhaps its the frequent skype calls or the fact that my room in my new french apartment is literally covered in pictures from home, but I am showing no signs of missing the Great White North. Strasbourg feels like home already. It is remarkable how quickly one adjusts to a new environment. And how quickly one makes meaningful relationships. It is hard to believe that I have only known my friends here a bit over a week, I feel as though I have been with them all my life. Not sure if everyone on exchange feels like this, or if I just lucked out, but so far – so good.
